4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome tent for the $, but with a few small issues, March 28, 2011
This review is from: Kelty Zenith 2 Person Tent (Misc.)
I picked this up at a local Target store for $60, but have not seen any reviews for it. It's not even listed on the Kelty website, so I suspect it's a "target" only model, which explains the heavier fiberglass poles and overall cheaper price when compared to similar 2 person Kelty tents. Many higher-end brands make cheaper version of some of their models exclusively for big box stores. Except for the lack of aluminum poles and a few small dimensional details, the design pretty much copies the Kelty Salida 2 tent ($160), which Backpacker Magazine just gave glowing reviews for.

If you replaced the poles and stakes with aluminum ones, you'd probably have a sub 4 lbs tent, but as is, it's not that heavy and it seems pretty well made with quality material and sealed seams. In this class of tents, you'll not get the heavy tarp-like floor, so use a footprint to help protect the floor. I've not had it in rain or cold mornings yet, but I'm tall enough for the head and foot of my... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Kelty Zenith 2 Person Tent- Great tent for the price!, October 30, 2011

This tent is similar to the Kelty Salida 2 the only major differences between the two are the poles (the Salida has aluminum poles while the Zenith has fiberglass The Zenith door is also solid where as the the Salida has a solid/mesh combo for ventilation. The dimensions are slightly different.

I primarily use this tent for weekend trips and the occasional kayaking trip. There is more than enough room for my 5'3 frame, my 50 lb. Lab and our gear. There also is enough sleeping space for two people but quarters might be a little tight depending on the size of the adults and the amount of clothing etc. that needed to be stored inside. The tent is quick and easy to assemble/disassemble even in the dark and I have had no issues like stuck zippers, leaks, broken poles etc. Great ventilation in the warm months where the rainfly isn't needed and air still circulates well when the fly is on and the doors opened.

My only qualm is that there was some condensation inside... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Withstood Mojave rain and gusty winds, April 15, 2012
This review is from: Kelty Zenith 2 Person Tent (Misc.)
Finally got to take it out this past weekend. It was windy with gusts up to 50mph where I was camping and rained on and off Friday (when I arrived) and Saturday. It withstood lots of rain and even a bit of hail, and I stayed dry.
Tent stood up very well to the wind, however I did have to place a rock on top of each stake. As expected, the included stakes did not hold very well on the rocky sand desert substrate, but with a rock holding it in it worked well. The wind bent the aluminum poles on my friend's REI tent, and another friend nearly had his cheaper off-brand tent destroyed by the wind. The included fiberglass poles were heavy, but held up well in the wind.

I did NOT guy out the rainfly (only staked the door/vestibule out), and it still held on fine. It probably would've been much more stable and held heat better if I did... on very hard gusts it felt like the whipping around the edges was allowing cold air to occasionally blow up and in. However, the design is... Read more
