Great Tent! Lightweight, spacious, easy to setup!, January 27, 2010 By Brenton Richards (Idaho Falls, ID USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Three-Person Ultralight Tent (Apparel) I have been using a North Face Starfire (tunnel-dome style) tent for 12 years on backpacking and a few car-camping trips with zero complaints - at least until my wife and I got a black lab dog. Quarters were cozy for the two of us, but for the three of us it was downright cramped. So we purchased this Sierra Designs Lightning XT tent for our backpacking outings to have extra room for our dog and gear. We like to hike, camp, and backpack year round in Idaho, so we get everything from 100 degree heat (for a few weeks, anyways) to wet and rainy Spring and Fall seasons, to 10 or 12 feet of snow. It is all usually accompanied by wind of some form or another. We haven't put three people in it, so I can't speak for whether or not it is a roomy 3 person tent, but it sure is a comfy and spacious 2 man tent, even with the dog.
The tent is super light weight; it packs down to the same size and weighs about the same as my North Face 2 man tent. Splitting it between two people... Read more

great ultra-light backpacking tent, July 16, 2011 By This review is from: Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Three-Person Ultralight Tent (Apparel) Bought this because I started doing more frequent and more extensive backpacking. Have had this on nearly a dozen backpacking trips, some two day, some three day. Many in the group use 1 and 2 person tents and call mine the "tent-Mahal." At slightly over 6 lbs, I am carrying a couple pounds more tent weight than anyone else, but stretching out, being able to sit up, and having a sizable front vestibule all make the couple extra pounds worth it. No coffin sleeping for me. I've leaned down my other gear so packing this 20 miles doesn't bother me. It's been though early spring snows, summer downpours, and a fair amount of winds and performed great through it all. Not intuitive to set up(easy to reverse the poles), but is a breeze after setting it up in the house before I took it into the field for the first time. I hope to get many years and quite a few hundred miles of backpacking out of this tent. Would heartily recommend it anyone wanting a serious ultra-light backpackers... Read more
Great start for a new camper, April 23, 2012 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sierra Designs Lightning XT 3 Three-Person Ultralight Tent (Apparel) My new years resolution was to become a camper and a primitive camper at that.
I made this tent one of my first purchases. I was looking for something lightweight and easy to set up with room for me (over 6 ft), my boyfriend (also over 6 ft) and our 2 dogs (over 50 lbs each). I found the price of this item compared to it's features (weight, size, 2 doors, rain fly, all mesh, etc.) was just right for a new camper who wanted something decent but didn't want to break the bank.
I practiced putting the tent up in the house (after the second time I was ready for the real deal). I admit I waterproofed the fly before our first use, most pro's recommend this no matter what tent you buy and I figured it couldn't hurt.
The tent worked perfectly. The four of us spent a below 40, rainy night, dry and happy inside our new tent. Well staked, using only what the tent provided, the rain and wind were no contender for our warm dry beds inside. We sleep pretty close together... Read more
